What a lovely, intentionally vague story. Too much propellant? Too little? Enquiring minds 'gots to know'.

With the mention of damage to the guns and/or person firing it, my guess would be be more than is required to get the bullet down range, to the point that the breech might suffer damage and throw shrapnel.
