Being Only Familiar With Having Been Employed By Our Schools, Here In Vegas.
There Are A Few Reasons This Occurs.
#1.. Beginning Teachers Whom Can't Find Work In Their Home States, Come Here And Take The Jobs For Some Experience; Then The Following Year, Go Elsewhere For Permanent Careers, Where Salaries And Benefits Are Much Better......

#2... Others Come To Vegas For The Glitz & Glamour; Accept Substitute Positions While Waiting For Better... BUT: ~Ready For THIS ?~ ~~ If They're GREAT SUBS, The District Won't Hire Them For PERMANENT Positions, Because They NEED Good Subs They Can Rely On. ...
.YA,.. NO SH*T !! ~ Ain't That Great?..~
So We Have A "Shortage" Too.~~ Who's Sh*t'en Who?
But I'll Guarantee, They'll Never Admit It,

#3.....Our Teachers Are Paid CRAP WAGES & It's Difficult To Make A Good Living.
Nevada Pays One Of The Lowest Wages To Teachers, In All 50 States.....
Not Exactly Something To Be Proud Of...
So Once They Feel They Have Adequate Experience To Be Accepted In Other States, Or Back Home,
They're GONE!, Wouldn't You?

Fact Is, I Was Offered A Position To Teach Printing At A Vocational School.....

I Replied "Ya Gotta Be Kidding, I ALREADY Make Better Money Than The New Teachers..
And I Don't Have To Put Up With YOUR Bull Sh*t Either" ....
I Was Offered The Position From Our Principal, And We Understood Each Other, But The Actual Offer Came Through The District Office ,But From Our Principal's Recommendation,
Because He Was THINKING I'd Take The Offer.... ... WRONG !!
All I Was Required To Do, Is Take ~~ I THINK~ Was 4 Hours Of Teaching Instructions At UNLV .~~
My Experience Would Be Accepted The Same As Having A College Degree...
HOWEVER..., WITH The JOB I Had,.... I Was Able To Come & Go As I Pleased;
So Long As My Work Was Completed... An 8 Hour Day Was A Rare Thing, But Sometimes I'd Hang Out In The Break Area, Chatting With The Teachers As They'd Take Their Breaks Then Return To Their Class Room; Then We'd Go Out For Coffee Or Drinks At The End Of The Day..
I SHOULD BE A TEACHER?........... YA, RIGHT ! ........Sounds Like "WORK" To Me..
BESIDES:......I Was Already Teaching Some Special Ed Kids, Whom Were A Problem In Their Class Rooms..
If They Wanted To Learn Printing, Or Just SAY They Did, Their Teachers Were Glad To Get Rid Of Them.
BUT, In The Print Shop, We Had Fun, They Learned To Operate Every Piece Of Equipment We Had And We Were ALL Happy TOO....
As A Bonus, I LOVED Having Them Around.

Not surprising there are shortages with all of the crap with which teachers are subjected, from unruly kids to politically driven aspects of what they can or can't teach. Not to mention the usually low pay. Surprising that there are still people willing to take on the job.

CPT Lawrence Cable - .....
No Argument Here.....
Have You Not Seen Me Go Into A Rage Over How Lousy The Education Is In This Country? I'm A MIDDLE School DROP OUT.....About 95%Self Educated.
I Did For Myself, What Our Schools Couldn't Or Wouldn't Do.....I HAVE An Education.
FAR Beyond ANYTHING They Had Planned....
Thanks To The USAF & U.S.A.F.I.
Ask YOURSELF This:...
"Upon The Completion Of The 6th GRADE, What Was I Taught During The Following 6 Additional YEARS, Which Added To My USEFUL Knowledge For It's Betterment, OR Even QUALIFIED Me For ANY Form Of Employment"?..
~~ I'm Talking The 6th GRADE... The Last Year Of GRADE SCHOOL. ~~

Cpl Vic Burk - You 20 days also include 10 paid vacation days, I know quite a few Tennessee teachers too. I am sure that some teachers work more than the average, but they (you) or in fact outliers. Most school systems have programs to get supplies for the students that can't afford it, so spending hundreds on supplies isn't a common thing either. This is the find of the Brooking Institute, which has the same findings as any study not sponsored by the NEA. BTW, you are an endangered species in public education, you are a man and a veteran. https://www.brookings.edu/blog/brown-center-chalkboard/2019/06/12/do-teachers-work-long-hours/

CPT Lawrence Cable - The article sounds like a politician trying to kiss ass with both sides of the aisle with no true answer to the question. Teacher shortages are not going away in the near future. Depending on the subject the teacher is teaching it can be a very stressful job. Being the pottery teacher is much easier than teaching chemistry, biology or math but they get paid the same with substantially less accountability. And even more so with teachers with end of course exams that the school and district can throw in our face if students don't score well on them. Yeah, we get 10 days vacation pay but so does those working in management in industry.

Cpl Vic Burk - Working in management in industry usually isn't a 40 hour week and they work around 50 weeks a year. I used to have this conversation with a college professor friend of mine that complained that I made as much as she did as a full professor at UK. I pointed out to her that I worked 49 weeks a year (3 weeks vacation) and my average work week as outside sales was around 60 hours. She took an Admin/Dept Head job at OU and worked all year. Now complains about not having any time off. Or did, she recently retire Emeritus from Penn State.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I doubt there is anymore of teacher shortage than a nursing shortage (my career field). Not an easy path to become a teacher or an RN and when you create shitty working environments, that training and education is highly markable other places. I am willing to bet we have lost a lot of teachers to better environments and pay raises.

MAJ Byron Oyler There is in fact a shortage of teachers, here anyways, especially for math and science. Our classes continue to get larger every year because of it. Schools districts are trying to steal teachers from other districts to fill their needs. I was contacted last summer by three districts trying to get me to switch.
