Mostly agree - Yes, as long as there is no tie back to your employer that gives a connotation that they endorse (either explicitly or implicitly) your opinion (I'm not saying that was the case in this situation ... just as a general policy).

Same thing we do in the military.

I have mix feelings about this subject after watching the video and reading up on the matter. My opinion has nothing to do with the young man's opinion on marriage or religion. He however risked his job when he made the post on a public forum. His private account yes but still within a public forum. Individuals risk termination from any employer if said employer is mentioned anywhere on employes social media. It doesn't matter if it's rallypoint or Facebook or LinkedIn. If someone can be traced back to something and it breaks somethings values and principals for whatever reason it risks being taken out. If someone doesn't agree with someone on a certain subject they can report it to their employer and risk getting them fired. I've done this myself. When I was hired by my current employer when I will not mention. They said if you want freedom if speech and freedom of expression then keep your personal life private. Do not have us listened anywhere and their will be no problem what you say or do off of work hours. This young man did nothing wrong personally and I'm sure he can find officer ship somewhere else in Georgia. He just went against that departments guidelines and social media regulations and risked termination. It's not about religion, it's not about Christianity, it's not about marriage. Regardless if we work for public or private entities all have social media regulations written into their employment contracts. I just hope he finds a department that has more laxed ones.

PFC (Join to see) IMO, It is very very wrong when 1 person can complain and get someone fired, especially in a heavily short-staffed, very essential, profession as a law enforcement officer. The whole community will suffer with one less police officer being a safeguard in their area. The reality is, those who hate others’ beliefs realize just how much they can damage their livelihoods and safety.

Sgt (Join to see) I agree with you. But it can happen in any field. Whether your a doctor,cop, garbage person, cashier, ect. Unfortunately the officer will never know who it was because it's public. I'm sure the complaintant was anonymous. That's why we have to hide our professions, identity, ect. It only takes that one person to dox you. It can happen on any side of any issue. Especially if you're in an at will employment state. Your employer doesn't even need a reason to terminate you. They can make up a reason hiding their true reason.
