'Half American' explores how Black WWII servicemen were treated better abroad

NPR article on the treatment of black service members overseas during WW II. It seems likely when they experienced the world as it could be, the memory of that treatment followed them back home which drove a lot of social change as their generation started to gain political power in the 1960's. The poor treatment that they received when they got home because they were veterans likely steeled their resolve.
