As a recently retired soldier who was used to getting between $280 and 300 on my APFT, I was pleasantly surprised that I passed it. I still think it wasn't the right thing to do. Before you could brag about maxing the PT test, I don't think you're going to have very many soldiers Max it. There are a handful but you would always have at least 10 soldiers per Battalion that maxed the the obsolete Army physical fitness test.
It wasn't as hard as I thought but I still think they should have left it with the original apft. I knew they had the modify it for generals and other field officers or sergeant majors that needed to do the plank if they wanted to join a command team because they couldn't do one tuck.
I was not one of them. My very last APFT at age 57 years old I got a 299 and I was only 10 seconds away from getting 100 points on the Run.
I love how the military is having a field day with retention issues with not complying with this obsolete covid vaccine. The reserve component (NG and Reserve) are losing 50,000 soldiers as we speak ( as I recall, the reserve component and National Guard was 550,000) and I wonder how many are being lost because they can't pass Army Combat fitness test?
With everybody being so woke, I wonder if the US Army is going to copy the Canadian Army and allow cross-dressing soldiers because they can't Define what a woman is, either?
The William Shatner weird or what Canadian Army is probably the shape of things to come for the US Army/ military as a whole the way this woke and broke Administration is.

Members of Canada's military will soon be soldiering under much less strict dress rules as the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) introduces updated regulations on personal grooming.

We Air Force flyers worried about being able to run 100 yards or so from the alert facility to the aircraft. Beyond that PT tests were something to suffer through annually.

The US Army is moving from the Army Physical Fitness test to the Army Combat Fitness Test. The ACFT will become the test of record no later than October 2020...

Our old APFT was the push-ups, sit-ups and then the two mile run. We had plenty of time to rest in between them because they had to read out the standard for all soldiers to see of what was right and was a wrong form.
I know when you were in the air force, they had the Run Dodge and jump, the horizontal ladder and I believe they had to do a few other things as well as run two miles and boots. The Google search for the Air Force physical fitness test is one minute of push-ups, one minute of sit-ups and then a 1.5 Mi run.

LTC (Join to see) I remember what was your old APFT. I retired in 93 so the last one I took was 92. As a former college athlete I always considered it a joke but have to admit age made them a bit harder.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen yes, I agree that the old test was harder if I had to run the 2-mile run in Boots and if I had to do the horizontal ladder. I remember we had a female and basic training who could run very well but she couldn't do the minimum amount of push-ups at the halfway mark of basic and they had let her go.
When I was 40, I remember being a first lieutenant and having a platoon Sergeant who was muscular like a GI Joe in the push-ups and sit-ups but he would fail the run time but a couple minutes because he was overweight. This was back in 2000.
I agree about age, age and putting on weight slows me down. When I was in ocs, I was 33 years old and weighed 158 lb so running 2 miles in 12 minutes was easy. Fast forward to 10 years ago, I noticed it was hard to maintain a runtime below 14 minutes in the 2 Mile and when I ran the last one, I barely kept it under 15 minutes. I also weighed 178 lb. So yes, age does make a difference. Weight may make a difference as well. That's why I'm saying is the Army Combat fitness test should be given to soldiers that are mobilizing to go to war but keep the regular army physical fitness test for peacetime. I know you could increase it for Airborne units and you could also increase it for Ranger and special forces units. Actually, I think the covid-19 vaccine has done more damage because soldiers don't want to take it then the new Army Combat Fitness test. The reserve and guard components are losing 10% of their total Force just because they refuse to get the covid-19 vaccination and those forces were not even above 70 or 80% strength so they are gutted.

The Army, in all its infinite wisdom, lost sight of some things. The APFT was intended to be a low cost, have minimum logistical requirements, and easily administered any time and any where.
The ACFT is the exact opposite of that. It requires a llarge ogistic effort for every event except the two mile run. The weights, the sled for the weights, the kettle bells or ammo cans, and weighted balls all require movement to and from the test site.
Most of the Guard and Reserve units still don't have the equipment needed for the testing. But it's a requirement now, yay!
It's a not so great legacy gift from former SMA Daly.

Love it. Much better test. Though easier to pass overall than the APFT was, it’s much harder to max. Even our 12 minute 2 mile runners were running 14 on our diagnostic. It’s the perfect combination of absolute strength, explosive power, and strength endurance. I’m sure I’ll get plenty of disagreement here, but the APFT was never a good test of someone’s fitness. The only thing better about the APFT was that it was logistically much easier to administer, that’s it.

I agree. Unfortunately, I only had a chance to try it out at the end of my service.

SFC Stephen King I took it in August. Didn’t train for it, just did SOFLETE like I always do. Got a 539. The only event I didn’t make at least a 90% in was the plank. I was so mad about that because I could have pushed harder.
