India has been edging towards designing and manufacturing its own indigenous products, especially military equipment. The Cochin Shipyard Facilities was given the contract to construct Vikrant in 1999 and it has taken akmost 23 years for India to commission its first indigenous aircraft carrier into its Navy.
In aviation, India is indigenously manufacturing the Tejas Mark II Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), which will be tested next year and inducted into the Indian Air Force by 2024. The Tejas Mk II is a 4.5 generation multirole fighter.
Apart from the LCA, the Ministry of Defence in India has contracted the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited along with other collaborating Indian companies to design, develop, engineer, manufacture, test and deliver by 2026 the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). The AMCA will be a 5.5 generation stealth fighter and the AMCA Mk II is planned as a 6th generation stealth superiority fighter.
Only the U.S., Russia and China currently possess stealth fighters and bombers.

I don't blame them especially after the disastrous purchase of a soviet air craft carrier. I would be prudent to manufacture your own defense equipment.

India has relied upon Soviets, the U.S., France and others in the past. As China and Pakistan threaten Indian sovereignty and territorial integrity, building an indigenous arsenal of military equipment is of the utmost importance. The LCA and AMCA will put India on equal or better footing in case of war. In addition, the induction of INS Vikrant into the Indian Navy ranks is an added advantage for India.
