Yes, if you're vaccinated against smallpox, you have some protection against monkeypox

Good news story from last month...monkeypox is a serious outbreak, but some may already have protection. Previous studies claim that the smallpox vaccine is 85% effective against monkeypox based on similarity of virus category. Vaccine was required for general population prior to 1972 and still given to certain military personnel (e.g. overseas deployment to hostile areas, etc.)

First I read that and said phew I'm good then realized ah shit...I'm exempted from it because my daughter is a transplant recipient and would only get it again if I deploy for 30 days or more (last time I had it was 2005 and I'm pretty sure I was due for it in 2015) and she can't have live virus vaccines so she can never get the smallpox vaccine either.

SSgt Ray Stone - How is that good news? I'm not vaccinated against smallpox it seems and my daughter never could be. If that vaccine works against monkeypox and we can't get it...not so good news.
