Excellent read. Thanks for the share MAJ Dale E. Wilson, Ph.D. My father earned his silver star at the battle of the bulge. Patton pinned it on him and when he ask my dad what he did to earn it, my father told him he disobeyed orders to withdraw and held the line. His CO was relieved and dad turned down the battlefield promotion, telling patton that officers had a knack for getting killed and also told him him didnt even want another officer as he would get killed too. So he commanded his platoon as a SSG and only had enlisted in march of 1943. He was exempt from the draft as he had a job at Bethesda that was deemed crucial to the war effort. Dad was a PFC when he hit omaha beach. Sgt when they left the beach. And scout plt sgt during the breakout.

Not sure if My Dad Was there or not. He was Field Artillery in the 45th Division. He was certainly on Active Duty then.

SGT James Murphy - That would have been after Operation Dragoon--the invasion of southern France. I just confirmed that the 45th ID was part of VI Corps in Italy, landing at Salerno in Sept. '43, Anzio in winter of '44 and then southern France in mid-Aug. '44. They were then assigned to the Seventh Army on 1 Nov. '44 and entered Germany with Seventh Army on 17 March '45, remaining there through the end of the war.
