The Republicans will read the topic and often say the government will take all the guns and they will be defenseless. It is such a quantum leap and irrational. One of the posters who is a proponent of gun ownership ingloriously politicked about guns before the bodies of the poor folks in Uvalde, TX were cold. It was amazing.

I do not want the government knowing what guns I own. Gun safety courses and safes are old ideas. Remember in the 50's thru early 80's when most school districts had rifle ranges and grades 8-12 had to take a gun safety course? Then the liberals decided to cut those courses and marksmanship programs...along with Votech and shop.

MAJ Ken Landgren -
Gun registration is a non-starter because history shows us how tyrants moved quickly to gun confiscations in select groups. Jim Crow in US, Jews in Nazi Germany, Stalin in Russia and Mao in China to name a few historical examples. Stop any legislation that will imping our 2nd Amendment rights.
We need to improve our mental health system. The US now has 1/4 the number of MH hospital beds when compared to the 1960's.
Start enforcing the laws already on the books. That also means recalling the George Soros supported DAs that have made the justice system a joke. Holding criminals accountable and stop the judicial revolving door of no cash bails for violent crimes.
Bring back the Marksmanship Safety courses in the middle and high school levels in all school districts. This will help stop demonizing the tool (fire arms) and put the focus on the individual responsible for the crime.
Make our schools "hard targets" on the model of the Israeli system.

Tell me the significance of the Jim Crow laws. Will you be opposed to gun buybacks?

As long as the gun safety courses and test are provided from the government for free, then yes I'm all for these. They seem like a very, very modest requirement for something all gun owners should have.
Having said that, I don't know that these would have stopped any shootings.

I'm all for responsible gun ownership however we need to stop kidding ourselves and think its as simple as few more rules to end the violence.
So is the government going to teach pressure cooker safety lessons as well? What about knife safety or blunt object safety?
Point is someone filled with rage can purchase a couple of pressure pots for a lot less than any AR without any age restriction and kill a lot of people. One of the Boston bombers was 19.
Again we need to focus on the issue of rage as the means in which the violence is carried out can change very rapidly.
If you look at the history of suicides and murders since 1968 to 2020 very little has changed despite all the new laws crafted.

What the data says about gun deaths in the U.S.
In 2020, the U.S. experienced a record number of gun murders, as well as a near-record number of gun suicides.

SPC David S. Oh I know, we'd have to get rid of them all, or at least most of them. I don't see that happening.

SPC Kevin Ford - one of the things that no one is talking about is how the government procurement and use of arms is directly connected to the private procurement and use of arms.
The US is home to a number of leading arms/weapons manufacturers. The US is fact the #1 proliferator of arms.
The US government was "smuggling" hundreds of thousands of guns into Syria and has no clue where any of them are.
https://www.newsweek.com/us-military-thousands-weapons-vulnerable-loss-theft-fight-against-isis-syria-1488013
The US government abandoned billions in arms in Afghanistan.
More than 300,000 of the total 427,300 weapons the US gave to Afghan forces was just abandoned in Afghanistan.
https://www.cnn.com/2022/04/27/politics/afghan-weapons-left-behind/index.html
And now look at Ukraine - betting the same thing happens there.
Its all connected to the same problem - our perception of "violence" having a meaningful place in our global society.

The U.S. military left "thousands" of weapons "vulnerable to loss or theft" during the fight...
A new report says officials failed to adequately track and store hundreds of millions of dollars worth of weapons sent to support U.S. allies.

SPC David S. - We left a lot in Vietnam too. We seem to spread the firearm love wherever we go. :)

Funny. When I was still in, I had a POW. Army didn't know about it because I didn't live on post and didn't bring it on post.
So there goes that ENTIRE argument.
Unless, of course, this Marine is advocating that we lock down the ENTIRE country, with a fence around the whole damned thing, limited points of entry, armed guards at every entry point, and all vehicles being subject to search at all times, but especially when entering or leaving the country. Because that is how the military is able to make their gun rules work.
Oh, also, when we sign up, we voluntarily agree to obey orders, and voluntarily agree to subject our own personal rights and freedoms to the greater good of the entire nation. There is that little piece, as well. Expecting to hold civilians to military standards - or even subjecting them to military rules - has never been a good idea. And has never been VIEWED as a good idea by smart, rational people, either.
