Sleep is typically associated with calm and rest, however recent studies have revealed that getting too little sleep can increase stress levels. According to the National Sleep Foundation, adults require 7-8 hours of sleep each night to function well. However, about one-third of Americans claim to sleep for fewer than 6 hours each night. Many people who are excessively stressed may find it difficult to get a good night’s sleep because their minds are constantly racing. Additionally, poor sleep can result in weight gain, worse immune system performance, and a higher risk of developing long-term illnesses including heart disease and stroke.
