So-I'll play the Contrarian here for a moment.
The USA (and apparently, the Russian Federation) are finding out that just because you learned a lot of lessons about how to fight a multi-front, multi-climate war a couple of generations ago-doesn't mean you are still proficient at it. We found out VERY quickly that the mountains of Afghanistan are not the streets of Somalia (or Iraq)... and vice versa. I'm sure Russian commanders are talking in similar ways about the differences between fighting rebels in Syria and partisans in Ukraine.
The point being... everyone's learning some valuable (and costly) lessons as we re-tool for the next generation of conflict- which, to my mind, is going to involve maneuver warfare as much, if not more than, counterinsurgency.
