My brother and I got at my dad's gun on number of occasions. He always hid the bolt (usually in his sock drawer) but we knew where to look. Parents have to be careful and keep them locked up when not in their direct control.

That is so horrible to hear of thing such as that and the death of a youngster. Basic precautions have to be taken to insure that children can't get a hold of Your firearms. This is a basic part of gun safety and I'm NOT against firearms but not practicing gun safety in all aspects of owning and handling them I have a big problem with. Access by Children this young is NEVER a good idea. While growing up I did learn how to safely shoot and handle firearms as did My friends. We all qualified on NRA shooting programs and even had our own .22 rifles, and some .410 shotguns and learned how to shoot and handle them safely but We weren't toddlers.

You also brought up another point about rifles and shotguns. They are bigger and harder to access based on size. Pistols are smaller and have higher risk of potential misuse from easier accessibility and ability to carry.
