Consider the states where this is legal: Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Are we really surprised?

It is "legal" there not through anything those states have done. The fifth circuit, which made this ruling, oversees those three states, and their ruling holds precedence over those states.

It's not even for compliance. It is, like you said, torture to extract information. Then they are going to take that information and use it to prosecute. I'm sure they won't even try very hard to verify it through another source.
