A friend here in my building works for a company that's working to remove bias from ML algorithms as well. It's all too easy to assume that a machine that can only understand 0's and 1's is infallibly unbiased, but when you make those algorithms extremely complex you start making assumptions. And when you want those algorithms to learn, you make more assumptions. Those assumptions get us in trouble.

That's a really good project. In medicine, patients have long been underserved--and dismissed--due to cognitive bias. It's affected women for a long time--the word "hysteria" was derived from the Greek root word "hystera"--which refers to the uterus, thereby ascribing (and dismissing) the extreme pain women felt to a "defect" in the womb.
The list goes on.
It's about time a directed study applies unbiased measurement to coherent data points against properly-formulated and unbiased, factual data collection activities.
