An incredible and heroic effort by her crew in spite of 800+ causalities fighting for the life of ship and remaining ambulatory fellow sailors. Commissioned in early 1944 she would only see 14 months of service before the bombing assault would remove her from further WWII service, Heavily damaged but floating the Franklin would hobble back through the Panama Canal to New York's Brooklyn Navy Yard (my actual birthplace) for repairs. It was decommissioned in 1947; reclassified several times in the early 50's for reserve service and finally scrapped in 1966.
