A guy I worked with was so adamant about a defunct chicken farm emitting aroma that he wanted to shut down the orange groves, because he couldn’t tell the difference. He continually espoused ideas that would shut down the businesses that the city’s citizens worked at, because it was the businesses’ fault that the southern San Joaquin Valley was polluted, not the topography which delivers San Francisco’s air pollution to the area hundreds of miles south. Science was apparently too hard for this guy, but we knew how he was, and the City Manager never let him get away with it.
The city was heavily Hispanic, but he never tried to get to know the people, as though they were unable to speak for themselves. He was one of the most prejudiced people I have ever met. “Sikhs are dangerous, they carry daggers and have to kill you if you see it.” This was my intro to him, first day meeting him. My VA doctor at that time was Sikh, and was one of the kindest people you could ever meet.
