Time for a trip in the "Wayback" machine. I seem to recall the AR-15 was sold to civilians before the M-16 was ever developed.

According to the US Military, who coined the phrase, an Assault Rifle is a “short, compact, selective-fire“ (using selector lever to switch from semi-automatic to automatic firing) “weapon that fires a cartridge intermediate in power between submachine gun and rifle cartridges.” The AR-15 only has the capacity to fire one shot at a time. And as usual, some civilian wanna-be picked up military jargon and changed the meaning to use as a colorful catchphrase for society. It’s like calling a career politician a patriot.
