I must have 20 squirrels in my back yard living in the gigantic oak trees that produce millions of acorns.

I think squirrels really go by smell. I plant acorns every year in containers, not the squirrels and if I don't keep them covered with a screen mesh of some kind the squirrels will dig them and my black walnut seedlings up PO1 William "Chip" Nagel.

All I know is they get me to dig them up for them from where they buried them in my garden come spring.
