SSG Edward Tilton - My understanding is that they were also pardoned by the Presidents of their time -- both Lincoln and Johnson -- of course, those men aren't as enlightened as we, are some 150+ years later. Again, responsibly acknowledging both traditions and history is a necessary task

Each generation must understand their past and choose how their environment honors the values of the institution. The highlighted esteem that some of the confederate leaders were held in was / is odd. Some modernization is necessary from every generation. It is OK to look at traditions and determine where they fit or if they fit anymore.
