Veteran in Need: We need everyone to read this. Share this. Spread Justins story as far as possible.
Nikki (Domenique) Selby sent us a post about a young, 31-year old veteran yesterday. She said he was recently diagnosed with Stage IV Brain Cancer and wanted to know what we could do to help this young Navy veteran.
Within minutes she gave me his phone number and I called him immediately. A soft-spoken, polite tone, I explained what HunterSeven Foundation was, and wanted to know how we could help.
Justin and his wife, Brandi were preparing to take their first vacation in many years when Justin started suffering from severe, worsening migraines and a weird lapse in his vision, his aunt convinced him to go to the Emergency Room in Pensacola when doctors came back and said the CT scan showed a tumor in his brain, compressed. He was immediately sent to surgery where doctors found a tumor the size of a baseball. Biopsies confirmed the worst, a Stage IV Glioma (BRAF mutation).
This 31-year old father of two had his life placed on hold. A few weeks after his surgery, he dealt with complications from a staphylococcal infection in his surgical scar, requiring a port placement for antibiotics. Now he waits…
Given how rare a BRAF mutation is for brain cancer (1-2%), it is critical that this diagnosis is completely and totally accurate before treatment starts because the drug chosen is dependent on this.
We at HunterSeven Foundation have mobilized to assure Justin has a second opinion at MD Anderson and/or Duke University Medical Center that we’ll assist in financially covering (not covered by his insurance) while our team works behind the scenes to get Justin enrolled at the VA.
This hits home, 31 years old. A husband, a father of two young children, a Navy Corpsman… diagnosed with Stage IV Brain Cancer.
We need the community to come together on this on this one.
But The top priorities per Hunterseven really are: (if you can assist in any of below most important the first one contact Hunterseven)
- Getting him a second opinion asap at Moffitt, MD Anderson, Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins, etc. with an oncology for a 100% course of treatment
- Getting him enrolled in VA care
- Getting him some form of service connection
