As a young man living in Oklahoma, (1927), my father was one of the few in the county that could actually drive a car. He was hired by a local man to drive the man's car to Winnipeg, Canada and "pick up some items" and return. He would be paid $100 on his return with the "items." Not aware of the influence of big-time gangsters on the importation of "items" he agreed.
He made the trip north without incident, but coming back was a different story. Dodging the cops was no problem, but dodging hijackers was tricky. He told us there were a number of attempts to stop him, but he was able to get around them.
Finally getting back to Oklahoma, he delivered the car and "items" to the man that hired him. He said that was the hardest $100 he had ever made throughout his life.
By the way, he used that money to buy an old car and the next year they joined the crowds heading to California. The rest, as they say, is history. Our family history.

It's a wonder we didn't implode... everyone is down on their luck and the government takes away the one vice people use legally to blow off some steam, alcohol, to be sure that every person is fully conscience to remember the miserable experience lol...
