The Air Force tried to kill the A-10 by clipping its wings and starving it of parts

It's been on the chopping block for a long time but there really is nothing to replace it. Problem is it's current role isn't what it was designed for. It was designed to kill Soviet tanks and that's a mission that was easy to get all services behind. When the Soviet Union fell the A-10 was an aircraft without a mission until some forward thinking folks came up with the CAS concept. Unfortunately that's not a role that all services can get behind, let alone provide funding for development of a dedicated platform in their budgets.

The other services want to do CAS their way, which isn’t necessarily the right way. Harrier is retired now. Anything to replace it?

And it's not a role that the fighter mafia likes either. It's not pointy and fast, so they aim to kill it. The Army then says they'll take it and the Air Force keeps it just to spite the Army.

That plane will fly with one wing and half an engine. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it
