On September 1, 1914, St Petersburg, Russia changed its name to Petrograd because St Petersburg sounded too German at the outset of WWI. An excerpt from the article:
"St. Petersburg is Russia's second-largest city after Moscow, and throughout history, it has been known by a few different names. In the more than 300 years since it was established, St. Petersburg has also been known as Petrograd and Leningrad, though it's also known as Sankt-Peterburg (in Russian), Petersburg, and just plain Peter."

I'll never understand Russian culture or their dark outlook on the future or their rampant paranoia about everyone. Clearly a people that feel cursed in some way.

I still recall targets in the St Petersburg area. While none of the fantastic structures were targets they certainly served as radar offset and visual timing aim points.
