Yamamoto lived in the US for a bit and knew it was a sleeping giant. He feared the production capability of the US.

At midway we threw waves of high altitude bombers and hit virtually nothing. We eventually used dive bombers that found their mark.

The Japanese navy was quite sophisticated in capability, but the loss of all the Japanese aircraft carriers meant we would rule the seas and the air. It was checkmate as we moved closer to Japan, and the Japanese navy was incapable of supporting their soldiers. It became a war of attrition. I am going to assume Japanese army generals realized that not having the requisite beans and bullets meant they could not continue a protracted war and shifted to making the Pacific War as painful as possible for us.
