Thanks!
Wife and I are scheduled late this year on a cruise (Viking) which most of the stops are in Greece, but two stop are in Turkey. May have to rethink the trip.

With what you say that itinerary sounds like stops around Izmir and Ephesus. Those were my old stomping grounds and that part of western Turkey was always welcoming to Americans. There is so much history in that area that I'd rely on Viking go keep its passengers safe but avoid any side trips not scheduled by the ship.

I stopped reading at Russia. I've been there (2014). Found the people to be mostly friendly, good food, good drink (probably too much of that) and no apparent animosity. In fact, most of the people I interacted with were more curious than anything else. Time to get my visas was uniformly 10 days. I had to change my dates of travel after getting the first visa, hence the plural. The hardest part of the trip was going through customs to enter the country, since the Sochi Olympics was coming up and the place was packed. The winter weather, however, was brutal. I stopped reading because if they were that inaccurate about Russia, I figured reading the rest would be a waste of my time.

As someone who was stationed in Turkey, I have to agree with you

When I was there 80-81 travel to Istanbul was restricted but otherwise we could go anywhere, which I did. So much history and we were always welcomed by locals, even if we couldn't always communicate well.
