My expectations would be through a lot of training in those conditions, we learn our mistakes and challenges that were not expected. This is a no shit, this unit is tough in those conditions. Let's go backwards in time. There were conquerors who were too confident of their abilities as they perceived future battles and wars too lightly. In seminal moments like this, the steel jaws of Russia's bitter winter bites down. The brutal winters will cause massive atrophy to the enemy. The enemies of Russia will learn they can't win, and things are starting look like crap. The foreign armies will retreat, but it will not be a peaceful one.
Russian armies wanted vengeance and they got it. Hundreds and thousands of German and French were killed fleeing that immense barren and cold waste land. The Russian armies chased relentlessly during the retreats. The Russians were in total control as they made plans to kill as many Germans and French as possible. The Russian armies were huge and well organized as military units. They wanted to kill Germans and the French with vengeance, and I do not blame them; and they did. They used large simple tactical formations in conjunction with terrain features like, hills, mountains, and generally different terrain. However it was like how can our army slaughter as many fleeing French in a large and logical plan. And that is what the Russians did. They showed no mercy. I would not either. Be careful of what you sow.
There are too many lessons in this allegory that I dare not get into it. It is mind boggling! lol
