I am reading "Liberty" by Isaiah Berlin. One of the essays is titled, "The Birth of Greek Individualism." The contribution of the Greeks, in this respect, was the discovery that the life and destiny of the individual did not need to be necessarily conceived in terms of his society. This opposed the previous "settled science" that subservience to the King, or to any government, was a citizen's first duty. The philosophical growth from the 4th century through the Renaissance was nothing short of world-changing. It was the spark that enabled the French and American Revolutions, and led to the idea that all of us are created equal, with equal liberty and rights and responsibilities and laws. Critical Race Theory, and the removal of Greek and Latin understanding from the Classical requirements, represent a reversion to pre-4th century philosophy.
