Governor Abbott issues Executive Order to stop most government entities from mandating masks

Governor Greg Abbott signed an executive order Tuesday that will prohibit counties, cities, school districts, public health authorities or government officials from mandating mask wearing.
If a local government or official tries to do so anyway, or imposes a restriction that is inconsistent with Abbott's order, the person could be subject to a fine of up to $1,000, beginning May 21.
"The Lone Star State continues to defeat COVID-19 through the use of widely available vaccines, antibody therapeutic drugs, and safe practices utilized by Texans in our communities," Abbott said in a statement.
The Republican continued, "Texans, not government, should decide their best health practices, which is why masks will not be mandated by public school districts or government entities. We can continue to mitigate COVID-19 while defending Texans' liberty to choose whether or not they mask up."

Another brain surgeon who makes mask wearing a political talking point. I have had many students who have had COVID. They don't need to be told to wear a mask. They have felt its effects and continue to wear them.

I am not a Texan, and never have been. Things might work differently out there. But IMHO, this is a bad move by Abbott.
While I applaud the effort to allow individuals to make personal decisions, I also believe in making policy at the lowest feasible echelon. I also believe that something like this should generally be done by the legislature, and not by the executive.

Well there are ways to keep people out of government buildings like having to provide proof of vaccination and since the cities ran the program they will have lists of who got vaccinated and can compare that list to anyone wishing to enter a city or county controlled facility. They can also choose to close the facilities to employees only.
