On May 12, 1975, the American merchant ship Mayaguez was seized by Cambodian forces. Often regarded as a footnote to the war in Southeast Asia, the Mayaguez incident was far from that. The rescue came at great cost to the Marines and Air Force. 15 men were killed in action and three Marines captured were executed. 23 service members were killed in helicopter crashes. 50 men were wounded. Four airmen were each awarded the Air Force Cross for their actions.

I knew a guy who was involved there, a Marine. He said he was very lucky to have survived.

A former CO was there as a 2Lt Infantry, I believe. He was not the type to brag. I knew him as a Major. He retired as a USMC Colonel and has a few more years as Army War College Professor in PA.
