Will We Ever Know Why Nazi Leader Rudolf Hess Flew to Scotland in the Middle of World War II?

One of those mysteries we may never solve. I'm for the coward theory.

Has anyone ever considered the possibility of Rudolf Hess's mission as being condoned by Hitler with the back drop of if it failed, He would be denied as a representative of the German Government on a peace mission. History is written by those that wield the power.
We all know what has been written, we know the possibility of the a treaty being considered.
It's not always what is said, but what is not said or done.
Hitler's own book mentioned the fact that Germany was destined to go east, to fight on two fronts was a mistake that even Hitler said was a problem. So, with that in mind I believe the trip to Scotland was a feasible plan if it had come through. Of course that was not the outcome.
