On April 27, 1865, the steamboat "SS Sultana" exploded on the Mississippi River. It still remains the greatest maritime disaster in American history. Most of the dead were paroled Union POWs on their way home.

Either someone tampered with valves on the boat, or like a lot of those boats of that time period, it had a malfunction that nobody was paying attention to Lt Col Charlie Brown
