Ok, I had my rant on my other post. So, since it was the GOP who first got us involved with supporting Bin Laden, I don't expect to hear any complaints from you guys when the Afghanistan version of the Vietnam Boat Lift starts. Had Ronnie paid LONGER attention to Afghanistan after Gorbachev gave up, things might of been very different. Bin Laden actually wanted to take out Saddam once upon a time. Of course, once Russia folded up, he didn't pay any attention there either. Darn, those places sure still seem to be in the news after 40 years. I think the leader of the free world F up.

When we invaded Afghanistan so many senior officers who fought in Vietnam said they learned their lessons from Vietnam. It sounded like it would be a cake walk. Win the hearts and minds of the people will facilitate us finding the Taliban and killing them. Provide securtiy and conduct nation building. Bravo!
Well we never had enough troops to find, identify, and kill all the Taliban that are spread out in vast country. It's like trying to play wack a mole. They can hear our helicopters. Our vehicles need flat terrain. Flat terrain is low terrain so the Taliban own the high ground. Can I say ambush time? How do you know who is the Taliban in mountain villages? They know how to hide. If they are spread out how do we kill them all at once? If we can't defeat them all at the same time, then how do we defeat them? Who would surrender to us if they are not defeated? Since the Taliban own the rural areas we can't provide security to the Afghan people, so we can't win their hearts and minds. If we can't win their hearts and minds, then they will not help us. Those are our military problems.
However, the Taliban have military problems as well. They are very spread out and and don't have the forces to conduct a "Tet Offensive". Right now they do not want to engage in large conventional battles that can change the face of the war. When the Romans invaded Scotland, the Scottish were spread out throughout the country. The Scottish did not want to fight the Roman army. Instead they hit the weak spots like supply lines and conducting asymetric warfare. The Scottish were so spread out that the Romans could not defeat them, and who would surrender Scotland to the Romans when there were so many decentralized leaders.
Using the Ends, Ways, Means test tells me with certainty that the end for the Taliban is Sharia Law. The end for the Afghan government is democracy. The Means will be Taliban vs Government forces. The ways will most likely be through civil war. I am not smart enough to know how the Taliban and Government forces will if they can modify the Ways and Means to win the civil war.
