Oddly enough, I just reread this about three weeks ago, and like the author of the article mentions, it was a whole different book than what I read as a teenager. I was jolted by the many subtly negative comments on minorities and women (and the labeling) , and found that although I really liked the story this time around, there is not a single sympathetic character in it. I would not want to meet any of these people. Gatsby is a little snob, social climber, and jerk, besides being a criminal, and he is the closest thing the novel has to a "good" guy.
I also found the disparagement of the American Dream tedious and false in many respects, it comes across as the snobs (and one very much gets the sense Fitzgerald was one) sneering at those who have not "made the cut."
