SSgt Joseph Baptist S. Korea also fits that description. In summary, American volunteer mindset and elitist mentality contributes to the quality of our military during peacetime. But conflict brings patriotism out momentarily.

They are surrounded. Work in the defense is never done, including a good offense. They have more stringent requirements for service for the same reason. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conscription_in_Israel

CWO3 (Join to see) They aren’t the only nation or culture that is surrounded. But they are the ones that use that logic to get millions in funding from the US. The Kurds are an example of someone that could make the same argument but get little help from anyone.
