But what does this statement mean - "It also found that only one shot provides about 50 percent immunity from Covid-19"?

It means the immune response produced by one shot may not be sufficient to completely fend off an infection, or an asymptomatic spread but there is some underlying data to support increased effectiveness with a second vaccination. No vaccine in history has been 100% effective 100% of the time.
