Thank you my friend LTC Greg Henning for posting an obviously non-classified comparison.
Superior is better viewed from the perspective of the beholder or target of the respective organization IMHO.
1. Of note the Soviet Union has one President who came from the upper echelons of the KGB Vladimir Putin and George H.W. Bush was director of the CIA (January 30, 1976–January 20, 1977).
2. The KGB is officially younger since it was founded in 1954 compared to CIA being founded in 1947.
KGB background
a. The All-Russian Extraordinary Commission for Combatting Counterrevolution and Sabotage, or "Cheka" for short (its acronym in Russian), was the name of the first of the Soviet "secret police" organizations. It was founded by Felix Dzerzhinsky and functioned from 1917 to 1922,
b. GRU was founded as the Registration Directorate in 1918 after the Bolshevik Revolution. Soviet state founder Vladimir Lenin insisted on its independence from other secret services, which saw it as a rival.
CIA background
a. The CIA's pedigree includes the OSS [Office of strategic services.] Founded on June 13, 1942. William Joseph "Wild Bill" Donovan

Many of us in the military know this but the majority of Americans don't.

LTC Greg Henning Call it the Voice of Experience, the KGB/FSB has a Longer History and More Experience. Although Russia is Now "Capitalist" Not "Communist" More Correctly a Kleptocracy, the KGB and Russian Mafia Joined Forces after the Supposed End of Communism. I Wouldn't be Surprised if the "FSB" has Pictures of My Ugly Mug from My Days in London.

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel
LTC Greg Henning I used to Get a Kick watching the KGB Take My Picture entering the US Embassy London while British Intelligence took the KGB Agent's Picture. London Was a Riot!
