I was picked up BZ for major while in grad school prepping to teach military history at the USMA. I was then a first-time select for resident CGSC. After Desert Storm, my branch told me that even though I was a BZ major, they did not see me as being competitive for battalion command because I was four zero when I made Oscar four! As a result, I was advised that a return to troop duty after CGSC was out and they wanted to know where I would prefer to ply my trade as a historian with doctorate: remain at Leavenworth, go to the War College, or go to the Center of Military History. I told them if I was going to be an army historian for the rest of my career, I'd be working for half pay and that I'd just as soon retire and give my seat at CGSC to someone who could use it to qualify for battalion/squadron command. It was the best move I could have made. . . .

MAJ Dale E. Wilson, Ph.D. - Glad things worked out for you. I tried to get out of CGSC but could not. I did enjoy the evolution of my military knowledge from tactical to strategic. My favorite course was related to why do insurgencies exist and how they were countered. What did you do when you got out?
