Camp Sumter, also known as Andersonville prison, housed 45,000 captured Union soldiers during the Civil War. Conditions at Andersonville were so horrific that 13,000 soldiers perished, many from overcrowding, starvation, and exposure. After the conflict, the Andersonville commander was put on trial for war crimes.

Read the transcript of the trial. Not sure a conviction would hold up today. No names of alleged victims are ever mentioned. It was proved later that some "witnesses" weren't at Andersonville.
General Lew Wallace. who wrote "Ben Hur", briefly served as a major general in the Mexican army, governor of the New Mexico Territory, pardoned "Billy the Kid", and served as U.S. minister to the Ottoman Empire, was president of Wirtz's trial.
