I am not sure what the two guys in the pick up thought they were doing...Standing out in the road with a shotgun, trying to make a "citizens arrest" is likely to end you up in a confrontation. Blasting away with your shotgun and claiming you were protecting yourself is beyond the pale.

If I was jogging and someone decided to pull out a shotgun and make a citizens arrest, I would have drawn my weapon and shot them, hopefully before they shot me. Someone drawing a weapon on you is grounds to use deadly force to protect yourself, period. Yelling citizens arrest doesn't change that any.

Even if this guy was burglarizing houses (which I've not heard credible evidence to support). That is not a death penalty offense and there is no reason to get in an armed altercation with someone over a home burglary that is not in progress.
