Pétain got life in prison in 1945, SGT (Join to see), and died on July 23, 1951 at a home in Port Joinville after having been imprisoned at the fortress on the Ile d’Yeu in the Bay of Biscay.

The problem with France is that her government was made up of several factions. One faction favored neutrality, one favored Germany, one Britain, etc. Neither faction had enough power to influence. Then you had Admiral Darlan who favored playing the Allies against the Axis and siding with whomever came out on top.

This is why Churchill had no choice but to attack the French Navy at Mer Al Kebir to keep it from falling into Germany's hands. One of the Marshall Plans' conditions from America was that France "clean up her politics" prior to being "given the keys back."

So considering the cluster f**k that constituted France's politics, its a weird dynamic. On the one hand, Pierre Lavalle was executed so Petain should technically have been executed as well. And then, stirring the pot - nothing happened to Italy...
