The treatment of black Americans in uniform prior to the integration of the armed services was appalling! I commend to anyone interested on the problem in WWII my essay "Recipe for Failure: Maj. Gen. Edward M. Almond and the Preparation of the 92d Infantry Division for Combat in World War II," which appeared in the July 1992 issue of the Journal of Military History. The selection of Almond, a
white Southerner, to command the first black division formed in WWII was disastrous. He insisted on filling all of the division's key leadership positions with white Southerners because they "understood" how best to deal with black troops. It truly was a "recipe for failure." . . .
