The P-51 was a game changer. It was able to escort strategic bombers into Germany and back which was not feasible before. Prior to the P-51, fighters escorted the bombers as far as the fuel allowed and turned around. The German fighters often lingered at this point to attack the unescorted bombers. It was instrumental in gaining air superiority as it shot down 5,000 German planes and 5,000 on the ground. With the advent of air superiority, the P-51 conducted air and ground attacks that caused considerable attrition to German units and logistics. This greatly supported US army units prior to going into battle. Germany still had many planes at the end of the war, but they hardly had any experienced pilots.
