I also love paper maps - especially topographical maps which indicate the terrain for navigating in unfamiliar regions, my friend CW5 Jack Cardwell.
Like most older soldiers I learned to navigate using the 1/50K maps the army used with a lensatic compass - sometimes 1/25k maps were used. I have topographical maps of PA, VA, WV and NC.

LTC Stephen F. The Maps app on my iPad does pretty well. I am able to pinpoint and view the Camp Casey location of 7th Signal Co, 7th ID in 1955.

Korea appears to have changed since then with many more trees and vegetation than I remember.

Even attempting to follow the MSR North thru Tongduchon (sp), on my iPad is difficult.

CW5 Jack Cardwell I was in the rolling hills of Southern Ohio - a bit confused - I saw a kid playing with a toy electric car on the paved road with no center line. I actually asked him if he knew how to get to the MSR. He replied, nope, I am from West Virginia!

That is why I preferred to use paper maps, anytime you ask directions of someone, they are from elsewhere and equally confused.

I've driven "roads" that weren't on any map.

I survived by those backroads while recruiting. 2700 sq mi and 9 counties makes for lots of windshield time.
