Two things:
- Navy Corpsman are not given enough credit for their bravery and actions.
- Two competing photographers were on that island. The one who took the picture with nothing better to do sauntered up the mountain and took pictures of the flag raising. I believe an admiral said the flag that was raised was too small and a larger flag was procured and raised. That is the famous and iconic picture. The second flag raising.

Great article. And the WWII Museum in NOLA = worth the visit when in the area. Been there twice.
