A very good article but incomplete. It fails to mention that our Representative Republic and its Constitution are firmly rooted in Western philosophy and Judeo-Christian ethics. The fundamental concepts of individual liberty and individual responsibility spring from those roots. Thus, while we are not a theocracy by any stretch of the imagination and maintain a respectful distance from all organized religion, we acknowledge our heritage in such phrases as "In God We Trust" and "...under God". Furthermore, while we will tolerate all manner of religious practice, we can never allow any individual or group to use their religion or dogma as an excuse to violate the constitutionally guaranteed individual rights of our citizens.
