Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen Most of my relatives were old school. They could not understand this as well. I had two uncles who served during Vietnam, one of whom landed at Da Nang with the Marines in March of 1965.

I remember this well. As far as I know I have never met one of these deserters. I have met many draft dodgers! Most but not all are good citizens.

My brother was in Nam and he come home one time, the one thing you have to understand about this story was my father was a lifer (did 22 years) and was a NYC correction officer. My brother comes in and tells my Mom and Dad he awol. Yes AWOL. So while my Mom made lunch my Dad called the MPs. Yes he did get to eat lunch. My brothers excuse was he wanted to go to President Kennedy‘s funeral. Oh yes the other thing about the story is that he stole a car to go to the funeral. He got sent back to Nam.

Draft dodgers, particularly those like Clinton that ran to Canada can NEVER be called good citizens. They are cowards, plain and simple. We as citizens have a responsibility to serve when called. Having an exemption is not being a draft dodger. Refusal to serve when physically and mentally capable is and should be a crime. George Washington was clear on this at our founding. When someone willingly and illegally refuse the draft, someone else must go in their stead.

This was a terrible decision. We should have left them to rot in Canada.
