Police should stop responding to calls due to legal reason and just let things sort themselves out.

LTC (Join to see) Then we could just get rid of them altogether then? Certainly if some are not willing to do the job in a way that doesn't put the public at risk, they should be sacked in favor of those that will.
The problem is that for the most part we've set up a system were they are rarely held accountable and it's no surprise at the results. It our service members are working under stricter rules of engagement than our police are when dealing with the public, we've got a problem.

I’d agree. We have a problem. The secondary problem is no one agrees how to fix it.

Your making that statement even before this case is adjudicated. How do you screen for Cops that suffer from inordinate fear or that are trigger happy........exactly? The smart thing to do would have been to call the residence but did it have a land line? If the cop was afraid he could have called for backup BUT was that the Department procedure in such a case? All items the investigation will turn up.
I am all in favor of the German system of Law Enforcement but also realize the Liberals in this country would oppose it. German Polizei are much better trained for stressful conditions, get a generous Federal subsidy so their uniforms and cars are standardized and so are their procedures. None of these wild variations from Police Dept to Police Dept. And the German system has really only one chief at the top vs many Chiefs in the American system where funding and supervision is very localilized. You also do not have German local Police Departments competing against one another over who can have the most militarized SWAT team.

SPC Erich Guenther We know enough from the article to know that at the best case the officer made a horrible mistake and killed some young lady in her own home who wasn't doing anything other than trying to live her life. That right there is enough to know there is something horribly wrong.
The "pants pissing afraid" comment was based on the legal defense law enforcement tends to use in these cases and the success that defense has had in court.
Edit to add: The problem that I have has a lot to do with the predictable results of that legal defense's success. Cops are in a job where they are going to reasonably feel in danger a heck of a lot; probably mostly in situations where there is no real danger. If it becomes, as it has, a reasonable legal action for law enforcement to use deadly force whenever they feel in danger, we are going to continue planting a lot of normal citizens doing nothing wrong.

Officer was green, less than a year on the force. She was inside playing videogames with her 8 year old nephew when an officer went around the side of the house, saw her through a window, and ordered her to get on the ground before opening fire shortly after. He didn't identify himself as a police officer before shooting. Police released a heavily edited body cam video, I'll wait until I see more evidence before making a judgement. I feel for her family, especially her sister and nephew.
