I visited the dam in 2000 which was the last full year for tourists to enter the bowels of this magnificent structure (due to 9/11 security concerns) which took the involvement of more than 700 different contractors to bring it on line. Cement was poured 24/7 for 3 years (from 1932 - 1935) using on average 7,500 barrels of concrete per day. It took 16 years (from 1935 - 1952) to cool at the core which was accelerated by running water through pipes which controlled the temperature at a consistent rate.
During the tour the guide took us to where the large transfer tubes used to move water to the generators (which are enormous) and told us to walk across one of them which took about 1.5 seconds. He explained that "In the time it took [you] to walk across that one tube, enough water had passed under your feet to fill 16,000 12 ounce cans of your favorite beverage"
And it does this all day every day. It was a tour I took on my own so I had all the time I wanted to walk around, ask questions and read the plaques on the walls.
I recommend it to anyone interested in one of the greatest structures of its kind in the world.

Thanks for posting this, Dave ~
