The British and IRA is a great story of defeating an insurgency. I should read more about successful counterinsurgency operations.

LTC Eric Udouj - Thank you. I guess I assumed incorrectly that the Brits won. They were able to bring the IRA to the negotiating table by superior intelligence which allowed the Brits to kill the IRA leaders.

That would be a reflection of what was wanted.... but it was not exactly the case. It was a draw -- and when the Brits finally got their intelligence set plus the rising actions of the Pro-Unionists terror played a part to put the IRA out of revolutionary business, as did war weariness on both sides. But success.... not really - so many mistakes - and how much we learned from those was telling in first 10 years in Iraq....
