The Germans' ingenuity at manufacturing synthetic oil took some of the edge off the losses in Ploesti, but it was indeed critical to their war effort. Much like the oil fields in Palembang and Brunei were key to the Japanese war effort.

If I remember properly, the Japanese experimented with extracting fuel from pine trees but it was short lived because they had to cut down a forest to fuel a plane.
